The Most Iconic Alyssa Edwards Quotes of All-Time

May 28, 2020 By Cade Hildreth Leave a Comment

You love Ru Paul’s Drag Race, right? Well, who’s more iconic than Alyssa Edwards? Alyssa Edwards is the stage-name of Justin Dwayne Lee Johnson, an American drag performer, choreographer, and entrepreneur.

This former Miss Gay America has taken the drag world by storm, and her amazing one-liners are not to be missed.

The two-time Drag Race contestant is an icon in the Drag Race community and the drag community at large, so if you’re getting into the show and the culture, she’s an amazing place to start.

Beyond being a talented queen, Alyssa Edwards is a savvy business owner and entrepreneur. She started her award-winning studio, Beyond Belief Dance Company, in Mesquite, Texas in 2003, which she owns and operates to this day.

She also starred in her own Netflix show, Dancing Queen, which chronicles her life as the owner of the dance studio by day and drag queen by night.

7 Iconic Alyssa Edwards Quotes

Given her meteoric rise to fame, let’s dive into Miss Edwards’ most amazing and iconic quotes!

1. “Get a grip, get a life, and get over it.”

Edwards, who recently appeared on Ru Paul’s Celebrity Drag Race, is known for her snappy quips that happen to hold true meaning as well. There’s no reason to obsess about the bad things in your life, when something good is just around the corner.

While she’s never won Drag Race, she’s still killing it out there. She even released a makeup palette with the major brand Anastasia Beverly Hills!

Alyssa Edwards’ journey just shows that there’s always something bigger and better out there for you, so don’t get hung up on the hurdles along the way.

2. “I don’t get cute, I get drop-dead gorgeous.”

Self-confidence is central to thriving as a human being, and it’s even more critical when it comes to being a successful drag queen. Drag is a high pressure environment performed in a room full of fans — and critics.

The above quote shows how Alyssa Edwards’ self-confidence is a core part of her success, which is a quality you can incorporate into your own life as well.

3. “Why the hell you squirpping like a chirrping, like a bird?”

Are there some people you know that just need to stop talking? Alyssa Edwards has the perfect quote to get them to zip their lips. In her season of RuPaul’s Drag Race, Edwards had plenty of occasions to tell people to keep their mouths shut.

When Coco Montrese was embarrassing herself, Alyssa Edwards had the exact right comeback to throw her way.

Being entertaining while being truthful is a great quality in a person. Like in Mary Poppins, it helps to add a little bit of sugar so that it’s not as difficult to take medicine, right? In some cases, humor can help the person you’re talking to feel less offended and take your criticism in the manner it is intended.

4. “Baby, nothing was notarized. No contracts are signed. My attorney was not present. That was hogwash.”

Have you ever had someone taking credit for your work? Well, that’s happened to Alyssa Edwards too. Alyssa Edwards knows how to call someone out when they misrepresent what she’s about, and she’ll do it with class and style.

5. “Reading you is like reading a Walt Disney book, it’s simply too easy.”

Reading is an important skill when it comes to being a drag queen — and, of course, when it comes to competing on Drag Race. In this case, reading doesn’t mean what you’re thinking, though.

In drag, reading means when you come up with flashy comebacks and insults against your fellow queens. Alyssa Edwards is one of the strongest readers out there. Alyssa Edwards always has a comeback and always has a plan in mind.

Alyssa Edwards is such an icon of reading that she has taken her talents all the way to Andy Cohen’s Watch What Happens Live, where she reads the woman of the Real Housewives franchise!

6. “Every woman has a secret. Mine happens to be a little bigger… I’m a man.”

Like many drag queens (but certainly not all, which is important to keep in mind) Alyssa Edwards identifies as a cis gay man when not in drag. But, she still manages to work that fact in with a laugh and a great quote for living your life.

In Rupaul’s words, “We’re all born naked and the rest is drag.” Similarly, Alyssa understands that drag challenges and disrupts gender expectations, capturing that with humor in this quote.

7. “Don’t get bitter, just get better.”

This last quote is really a great philosophy for life (and for competing on Drag Race). Instead of whining about the people who beat you, you should work on yourself and improve your skills, so you can succeed the next time around!

Alyssa Edwards herself is a really good example of this quote — after all, she did lose RuPaul’s Drag Race twice, but still keeps working on improving her craft and working on her drag.

It’s a really good lesson for us all — if at first you don’t succeed, try and try again.

Alyssa Edwards Quotes For Every Occasion

There are so many amazing Alyssa Edwards quotes, we haven’t even scratched the surface here today. She’s not the only person in the LGBTQ community with tons of iconic quotes. There are plenty of amazing icons, many of whom are from the Drag Race empire, who spout inspirational and hilarious one-liners every other line.

“Growing up is the realization that you are both “Growing up is the realization that you are both the sculpture and the sculptor, the painter and the portrait. Paint yourself however you wish.” -Nicolas Cole

For me, growing up has been a process of learning to look inward. It is about “listening” to the clear signals from my body, which always knows the answer if I’m willing to hear it.

My job is to listen and respond to that knowing. That to me, is emotional maturity.
