Ruby Rose: Her Life, Career, Surprising Facts You May Not Know

January 14, 2021 By Cade Hildreth Leave a Comment

If you’ve been binging Orange Is the New Black, then you’re well aware of the superstar Ruby Rose. With her edgy tattoos and slick short hair, she caused quite the commotion when she appeared on the screen. People didn’t know much about the Australian model beforehand, but were curious to know more once they saw her.

Ruby Rose is a talented individual who has appeared in a number of high profile films and TV shows. She also does her own filmmaking and is a skilled athlete. If you’re interested in learning more about Ruby Rose, you’ve come to the right place.

Surprising Ruby Rose Facts

Ruby Rose’s childhood wasn’t too out of the ordinary. She was born in Melbourne, Australia, to a single mother. She traveled frequently and attended University High School.

1. Claim to Fame

It was 2015 when Ruby Rose joined the cast of Orange Is the New Black (OITNB) for Season 3. This was a huge Netflix show, so it gave her a celebrity boost. Since then, Ruby has gone on to star in different television shows like Dark Matter.

2. Early Stardom

Before landing a role in Orange Is the New Black, Ruby Rose made her claim in 2002 by auditioning for the Girlfriend model search. This was an Australian teen girl magazine that has an annual modeling competition. She came in second place, which put her on the map.

3. She Loves Tattoos

Ruby Rose is pretty inked up, she has almost 60 tattoos. With a wide variety of styles and meanings, this is one of the reasons people love Ruby. She has a big personality and an attitude that says she doesn’t care what people think about her.

That kind of confidence is hard to beat. Some of her more notable tattoos are the “JUST LOVE” tattoo across her knuckles and the word “smile” on her ribcage. There’s also a lot of cartoon characters, including Gumby and Astro Boy.

This body art shows off Ruby Rose’s personality and style.

4. Coming Out at a Young Age

Ruby Rose came out when she was only 12 years old. Unfortunately, she mentions that she was bullied and it was both verbal and physical abuse by male students. Although she had to deal with that in her early life, Ruby Rose is now open and confident about her sexuality.

Today, she’s an LGBTQ+ icon, both on and off screen.

5. She’s Genderfluid

Ruby Rose is not someone who’s going to let anyone put her in a box. The model/actor self-identifies as genderfluid. If you’re unsure of what genderfluid means, it relates to a person who does not identify as having a fixed gender.

When asked about her gender identity, Ruby Rose responded: “The message I wanted to explain to my fans was why I dress the way I dress. Or, why I am the way I am. Because I still was getting those questions of, ‘Why does she look like a boy?'”

For Ruby Rose, looking conventionally attractive isn’t as important as being able to express herself. Nonetheless, she is widely regarded for her edgy appearance and androgynous good looks.

6. Ruby Rose Can Box

Ruby Rose comes from a sporty family. Her grandfather is bantamweight champ Lionel Edmund Rose. At one point in her life, she wanted to become a professional boxer too. In 2012, Ruby began training to compete in a charity boxing match.

It took her only three months to get to an impressive athletic state. Go through her Instagram and you’ll see plenty of videos of her showing off her boxing skills. You might even find an old video from 2012 where the star is seen boxing with Yi Sia and delivers a smashing blow to her face.

7. She’s Multifaceted

Beyond acting, Ruby Rose dabbles in multiple creative endeavors. For one, she’s a filmmaker. In 2014, she made a film titled Break Free in which she cuts her long hair and frees herself from what people expect her to look like.

According to Ruby, it’s about gender roles, being trans, and what it is like to have an identity that deviates from the status quo.

It was a smashing success. It was viewed more than 52 million views on YouTube.

Ruby Rose is also a DJ and continues to play at nightclubs throughout the world today.

8. Ruby’s Pet Pig

Ruby Rose is a vegan, which means she doesn’t eat or wear anything made of animal products. She clearly has a love for animals and the environment. This is also evident because she has a pet pig.

She’s vocal on social media about climate change and veganism as well, urging her followers to try the diet to help combat environmental issues.

9. Mental Health Warrior

Growing up dealing with bullies can be difficult for anyone. Ruby Rose took that pain and decided to champion helping others with their mental health.

Ruby Rose is open and transparent about her mental health issues. She encourages her fans to love themselves and to find professional help when necessary.

10. The First Batwoman

Last but certainly not least, did you know that Ruby Rose was the first live-action Batwoman? Ruby Rose was cast as Kate Kane on the CW’s Arrowhead, where she played Batwoman. While there’s plenty of people who have played Batgirl, this is the first time people have seen Batwoman on the screen.

In 2020, Ruby Rose left that role because she was recovering from surgery and felt like it was time to move on.

The Wild and Wonderful Ruby Rose

Ruby Rose is massively well known, thanks to her stunning looks, edgy fashion, and her high profile roles in Orange Is the New Black and Batwoman. She also has an impressive 16 million fans on Instagram.

Despite her rapid ascent to fame, there’s still a lot to discover about Ruby Rose.

Although Covid-19 has put a slight damper on her acting career, you’ll want to keep your eye out for Ruby and the action she gets into in 2021.

Erin and I are smiling in this photo, but only a few times in my life have I been so devastated, so heartbroken, so utterly and emotionally broken.

When this photo was taken, we had recently had to say goodbye to our dearest, move beloved baby, Percy, who we had raised since adopting him at birth. He was our cherished companion, a therapy dog, and our beloved friend.

The last photo was taken on our very last walk ever with him. 🐾👣🥺

This post is a reminder to be gentle with each other, because this human experience is extremely painful … and we’re all in it together. 🐶🌎❤️
