13 of the Best Lesbian Movies on Netflix

June 8, 2020 By Cade Hildreth

It’s not every day that a lesbian-themed movie is trending; you usually have to go looking for them. When you do, you often run into movies with lousy representation or extreme cliches.

Searching and scrolling can be exhausting, so this guide is meant to be your shortcut.

13 of the Best Lesbian Movies on Netflix

Below are 13 of the best lesbian movies on Netflix that you should stream today.

1. Blue is the Warmest Color

This emotional movie is based on the novel that also has the same name. It entails a 15-year-old girl who just wants to fall in love, but the boys she meets just aren’t piquing her interest.

She soon meets a blue-haired girl who is an artist and her world is changed forever. Lesbian Netflix movies aren’t all this long, but this 3-hour movie is worth the watch.

2. The Half of It

This feel-good movie involves friendship, love, and loyalty. In The Half of It, a popular school jock reaches out to a smart, but shy Ellie to ask for a favor. Ellie agrees to write love letters to the jock’s crush for him.

Their new friendship gets complicated when Ellie finds herself falling in love with the girl she was hired to write letters to. She has to decide what means more to her, friendship or love?

3. Loving Annabelle

A Catholic boarding school teacher does the unthinkable in this LGBTQ movie. She risks everything when she engages in a relationship with a female student.

This is one of the lesbian movies that retells an already known classic.

4. The Feels

This is one of the hearty lesbian love movies out there. The Feels is about a lesbian couple about to get married. During their bachelorette weekend, the couple begins to have problems when one of the brides admits that she has never had an orgasm.

Will love conquer all in this movie? You’ll have to find out yourself.

5. Minnaminungu The Firefly

The best lesbian movies combine culture and the LGBTQ community. In this movie, an Indian mother mourns the loss of her husband while her daughter mourns the loss of her father.

The daughter wants to study abroad so her mother juggles many jobs to allow her daughter’s dream to come true. Her daughter begins to overcome the loss of her father when she meets a new lover while she is abroad.

Problems arise when it isn’t what her mother expected.

6. But I’m A Cheerleader

If you’re ready to roll with laughter, this is the movie for you. 17-year-old Megan has unsupportive parents that suspect she is a lesbian. To fix this, they send Megan to a rehabilitation camp led by a homophobic counselor.

After meeting a new friend, she begins to question whether or not her parents were right about her sexuality.

7. Elisa and Marcela

If you’re looking for the best lesbian movies on Netflix, you have probably come across this one before. This 2019 film is based in 1901, a time where being a lesbian was an unthinkable crime.

To marry the woman she loves, Elisa adopts a male identity. This love story is based on true events.

8. Tig

Tig is the perfect movie for those who enjoy documentaries that go through adversity. Tig Notaro is a stand-up comedian who makes a comeback after going through the hardest time of her life.

The story includes her cancer diagnosis and her love story with her now-wife Stephanie Allynne. This one is a real tear-jerker so have some tissues handy.

9. Concussion

You may not have heard of Concussion, but it is one of the more compelling lesbian movies on Netflix. Known as an underrated hidden gem, this movie will keep your interest the entire time.

The story involves a lesbian housewife who feels bored with her marriage because it lacks excitement and passion. To combat the feeling of being trapped, she begins visiting female prostitutes and later becomes a sex worker herself.

10. Duck Butter

The intimate movie, Duck Butter, takes two women on a journey to finding love. They spend 24 hours together in a goal to spark intimacy. They embark on a sexual experiment together because they are wary of dishonest relationships. During the 24 hours, they vow to be honest with each other.

The ending will leave you hanging which can be an issue for some viewers who like closure. For those who enjoy thinking about the message of a movie when it ends, this one is for you.

11. The Perfection

For those who love a good twisted horror film, this movie is for you. An up and coming cellist shares an intimate encounter with the biggest name star from her previous music school.

This re-connection has some strings attached. It leads to reuniting with other former mentors from the school who have been awestruck by a new talented person. The horror unfolds in ways you don’t expect.

12. Lovesong

This understated lesbian film came out in 2016. The story is about two women, one who feels neglected by her husband and another who is about to get married. These best friends decided to go on a road trip together which led to romantic feelings between them.

Later on, the two struggle with what happened on the road trip and try to reconnect before a wedding.

13. Lez Bomb

Another hidden gem to watch movie is Lez Bomb. This holiday comedy shares the story of a girl trying to come out of the closet to her family on Thanksgiving. Things get complicated when her male roommate shows up for dinner at her parents’ house without calling ahead.

This awkward, yet funny movie is one you won’t want to miss out on.

With anti-LGBTQ+ and anti-trans legislation on the With anti-LGBTQ+ and anti-trans legislation on the rise, I have enormous RESPECT for people for are taking action to support our communities. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

Putting this into action are Dr @EricCervini, an author and historian, and his partner @Adam_Powell. Together they will be driving a bus full of banned #queerbooks across the U.S., starting this summer!

I absolutely love this idea—and can't wait for them to swing by Virginia!

From an article shared on XtraMagazine.com:

“With LGBTQ2S+ books under attack in the U.S. at record rates, author Eric Cervini and his boyfriend, actor Adam Powell, knew they wanted to take action. While others are organizing with protests, drag queen story hours, days of reading and other important acts of resistance, Cervini and Powell have their own spin on what to contribute to the movement—and that spin has wheels.

The pair are working on buying, then building, what they call the Rainbow Book Bus, a bookmobile carrying queer and trans books to small towns.

After reaching their crowdfunding goal of USD $100,000 at the end of December, Cervini and Powell are now able to pay a specialized company to retrofit a school bus to become a beacon of queer literature.

‘Our goal is to have at least an early version of it ready by Pride [in June],’ Cervini tells Xtra. ‘We want to have a bus that is converted—it may not be fully decked out, but it will be functioning as a travelling book shop/book fair—in the summer of 2023.’”

If you'd like them to visit your town, share it in comments! 🌈🚌

This past summer we took a trip to Madden’s resort in MN to celebrate my parents 50th wedding anniversary with my parents, sister, brother in law, wife, niece and nephew.

It was actually their 52nd, because we had to postpone it twice due to Covid! 🌊🏖🐟
