Whether you identify as gender nonbinary or not, following nonbinary celebrities on social media can be an amazing thing.

If you’re not nonbinary, you can see what it’s like to live as a nonbinary person. If you are nonbinary, you can get validation from seeing someone like you do amazing things in the world with their brilliance and talents.

There are a number of amazing non-binary celebrities today who deserve your follow. Read on to discover nine of these celebrities and where you can find them on social media.

1. Jonathan Van Ness (JVN)

Jonathan Van Ness, perhaps best known for their role on the hit Netflix show Queer Eye, came out as nonbinary in 2019.

JVN said they never really had an “aha” moment when they realized they were gay or nonbinary. JVN just learned that there’s a term for an identity they had been living his whole life.

JVN also starred as the first non-female cover of Cosmopolitan magazine in more than three decades (see below)!

You can catch Van Ness on season five of Queer Eye, doing the podcast Getting Curious, or executing those gorgeous toe loops on Instagram. JVN is at 4.8 million followers and growing, so they must be doing something right.

2. Lachlan Watson

Lachlan Watson is breaking barriers as one of the youngest nonbinary actors working in Hollywood.

They star on The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and in Netflix’s What I Wish You Knew: About Being Nonbinary. Lachlan’s character in The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Theo Putnam, is nonbinary, too.

Lachlan identifies as both nonbinary and pansexual. They say of their identity, “Those are two very fancy ways of saying, ‘I don’t care.’”

Lachlan prefers they/them pronouns and is active on Instagram (@lachrwatson), where they share photos of fashion, design and their top surgery scars, because they are rightfully proud of the journey they represent. With 620K followers, Lachlan is definitely having an impact.

3. Amandla Stenberg

You may recognize Amandla Stenberg from their role as Rue in The Hunger Games. Amandla also played Starr Carter in The Hate U Give in 2018 and was listed as one of Time’s Most Influential Teens in 2015 and 2016.

Born on October 23, 1998, Amandla is one of the youngest people on this list. Amandla identifies as both nonbinary and bisexual and pansexual. In a message shared with Tumblr fans in 2016, Amandla described a nonbinary identity and a preference for either she/her or they/them pronouns.

In Amandla’s own words, “I’m allowed to explore myself.”

Amandla is also an outspoken intersectional feminist and was named Feminist of the Year for 2015 by the Ms. Foundation for Women.

4. Asia Kate Dillon

Asia Kate Dillon has the distinction of being the first nonbinary actor to star on TV. They played the role of Taylor Mason in Billions, a character who is also nonbinary. In fact, it was while playing Taylor that Asia realized that they were nonbinary and preferred they/them pronouns.

Asia Kate also played a character on the famously queer-friendly Orange Is the New Black. They have said that they identify as pansexual and is the founding and producing director of MIRROR/FIRE Productions.

5. Ruby Rose

Ruby Rose has been a nonbinary icon in Hollywood for a few years now. Ruby identifies as a lesbian and as genderfluid, though she had previously considered transitioning to male. Ruby has received some blowback from the LGBTQ+ community for these two identities and says that we needs to come up with a new gender identity term that will allow people to be fluid in her gender without having to conform to rules about who they love.

Ruby Rose landed a role on Orange Is the New Black and released a short film in 2014 about their gender identity. The actor also plays Kate Kane (“Batwoman”) on the CW’s new Batwoman series. This role is the first “out LGBTQ lead” in the network’s lineup of superheros.

6. Alok Vaid-Menon

Alok Vaid-Menon is a gender non-conforming (GNC) performance artist, educator, and writer. Alok who identifies as nonbinary and transfeminine, uses the pronoun ‘they’ and has received international attention for challenging the gender binary through fashion and poetry.

Alok was born in College Station, Texas, to an Indian American family, then went to Stanford University in California and now resides in New York.

Impressively, Alok was the youngest recipient of the prestigious Live Works Performance Act Award granted to ten performance artists across the world. Alok has also been featured on MTV, HBO, The Guardian, The New York Times, National Geographic, The New Yorker, and The New York Times.

Alok focuses especially on the plight of those who are visibly gender non-conforming, as they face the most danger and public scrutiny.

7. Sam Smith

Sam Smith is an English singer and songwriter who rose to prominence with the release of their debut album, In the Lonely Hour. That album included songs like “Lay Me Down,” “Money On My Mind,” and “Stay With Me.”

Sam also wrote the title song for the 2015 James Bond film, Spectre, and won a Golden Globe for Best Original Song.

In May 2014, Sam came out as gay, and in October 2017, they came out as genderqueer. Sam prefers they/them pronouns and says that after a “lifetime of being at war with their gender”, they’ve embraced themselves for who they are inside and out.

Sam’s public declaration of the use of “they/them” pronouns also helped support the pronoun “they” being choose by Merriam Webster as it’s Word of the Year.

8. Ser Anzoategui

Ser Anzoategui is best known for playing the role of Eddy on Vida, a Starz drama. Their parents immigrated from Argentina and Paraguay and so Ser identifies as a “nonbinary Latinx/Chicanx actor/playwright/activist.

They prefer they/them pronouns, and they like to swim, do hot yoga, sing along in the car, and create mindful recipes.

Ser has written a few solo plays, including one about self-discovery and queer themes called Catholic School Daze. They are very active in the Eastside community, working with the Latino Equality Alliance and Self Help Graphics, among many others.

9. Angel Haze

Angel Haze is a rapper who has found success in the music scene since their debut album, Dirty Gold, in 2013. Angel identifies as agender and doesn’t have a preference for pronouns.

Angel says they doesn’t consider herself to be of any sex, but rather, to be “an experience”.

Angel’s music is raw and confessional, confronting a childhood riddled with abuse and neglect. In 2015, Angel released a second album, Back to the Woods that deals with their suicide attempts and a breakup with Ireland Baldwin.
