October 11th is National Coming Out Day. Every year, on that day, people all over the country come out (or ‘invite in’) their parents, friends, and loved ones.

Of course, you don’t need to come out on National Coming Out Day in order to let people know about your sexuality. The thing about coming out is that you should do it when the time feels right for you.

Karamo from Queer Eye: From MTV Star to Queer Eye Fab 5

Unless you’ve been offline and away from television, you’ve probably heard of Karamo from Queer Eye. Queer Eye is a reality television series by Netflix in which five gay men known as the Fab Five sweep into town and makeover different “heroes” who need a little help learning to care for themselves. One of the Fab Five, Karamo Brown, has led a fascinating life that led him on a path to the Netflix reality show.

Karamo from Queer Eye is a single black gay father of two boys who has starred in everything from MTV reality shows to The Princess Diaries.

For me, growing up has been a process of learning to look inward. It is about “listening” to the clear signals from my body, which always knows the answer if I’m willing to hear it. 

My job is to listen and respond to that knowing. That to me, is emotional maturity.
