Because it’s the New Year, let’s talk about ch Because it’s the New Year, let’s talk about change...

For a long time, I’ve thought about top surgery. I remember when I was 6 or 7 years old when I wanted to run around outside on a hot, sunny day with my shirt off…and I first saw my parents… hesitate. Ughh.

It wasn’t their fault but I still remember that heart wrenching feeling. To their credit, they ultimately said, “Ok, go do it!” While I did “do it”, I remember the feeling of shame that crept in.

Over the years, being in affirming sporting/rugby circles helped suppress the urge to get top surgery, but it never quite “stayed down.”

So last summer I got keyhole #topsurgery. I’ll talk about recovery in another post because it was definitely weird to not strength train for months.

But in THIS post, I want to share two things:

1. I am SO grateful to my wife Erin for being the supportive and growth oriented partner that she is. 🥰🙏❤️

She is now following her call to get a divinity degree and she’s already working in ministry as a Pastor in Training at an incredible, inclusive Presbyterian church here in Virginia. I am grateful to her for supporting me as I become more and more of who I am—and I’m enjoying watching her do the same! Love you, babe!

2. Second, I’m grateful to get to share who I am with my family. This summer we took a trip to Madden’s resort in MN to celebrate my parent’s 50th wedding anniversary. (It was actually their 52nd, because we had to postpone it twice due to Covid.)

I was nervous to be in the pools and lakes around them, but I could feel it was my only choice because I knew I wanted them to “know me”. And, how could that happen if I “hid me”?

Ultimately, I have to tell you…it was freeing to be me, as I am, who I am.

I had the BEST time splashing around and biking and goofing around with my wife, niece, nephew, & sister. 🌊🏖🐟

So, I suppose, this is a gratitude post to thank those who have supported me over the years as I become more and more of who I am.

Top of that list is my wife, Erin, but there are countless others. ❤️

If you’re reading this, thank YOU for being one of those people in my life too. I am deeply grateful. 🥹

Interview with Jenny Nguyen, Founder of the Sports Interview with Jenny Nguyen, Founder of the Sports Bra—The World's 1st Bar to Only Play Women's Sports - shorturl.at/doGHZ

I'm excited to introduce you to today's #podcast guest, Jenny Nguyen, who is a professional chef, elite athlete, and entrepreneur.

I invited Jenny onto the podcast because she has done something extraordinary that is long overdue: She has opened up a sports bar that exclusively plays women's sports!

Despite extensive research, Jenny hasn't found another sports bar worldwide that ONLY plays women’s sports.

Given that it's nearly 2023, this is mind-blowing. As a lifelong athlete, I find her vision compelling and inspiring.

Aptly called the "The Sports Bra", the venue is putting Jenny's culinary skills on display alongside women's sports worldwide.

The Sports Bar has taken its mission a even further by partnering with and elevating other local, women-owned businesses.

Specifically, it:

1. Sources its grass-fed beef from @CarmanRanch, an ranch run by Cory Carman, a third gen rancher out of Wallowa, Oregon).

2. Sources its alcohol from Freeland Spirits, an all-women owned and operated distillery out of NW Portland.

3. Has furniture built by @girlsbuild_org, a non-profit organization headed by @ktmhughes in Portland, OR, that teaches carpentry and construction skills to young girls as a path to empowerment.

Since opening the Sports Bra this April, people have come from ALL over the U.S. and the world to experience it—including many professional female athletes.

To learn more about Jenny as she makes history, features women's sports, and elevates women-run businesses, listen to the episode here:

Have you heard of the Sports Bra or been out to experience it in person?

Frases de Glennon Doyle: 25 de sus declaraciones más ingeniosas y sabias

To call American drag performer, TV host, actor, and recording artist, RuPaul Andre Charles inspiring would be an understatement. As the most commercially successful drag queen in the country, with worldwide fame from hosting his own reality drag competition series RuPaul’s Drag Race, RuPaul is known for his gospel of truths. Get motivated with these 10 RuPaul quotes that will inspire you to be your fiercest self. The 10 Most Inspiring RuPaul Quotes Before we get into these quotes that are essentially more real motivational posters, let's learn a little bit more about who RuPaul is. RuPaul’s Drag Race has won nine Primetime Emmy Awards, three were for RuPaul for hosting. But RuPaul wasn't always on the top of the world. Back in the 80s, RuPaul was a struggling filmmaker and musician, who always found a way to stand out. He hustled in underground cinema, working as a club dancer and selling postcards of himself. Known not only by his outrageous outfits but his can-do attitude towards life which has made him so remarkable over the years. It's RuPaul's ability to embrace himself, which has inspired millions to do the same, making RuPaul an inspiring icon of pop culture who supports LGBTQ+ rights and fights for equality. It's no surprise that in 2017, RuPaul was part of Time Magazine's 100 influential people. That same year he made history as the first drag queen with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Here are ten of his most inspiring quotes. 1. "If you can't love yourself how in the hell are you gonna love somebody else?" RuPaul reminds us of the importance of self-love, which should never be overlooked. Relationships don't work unless you love yourself too, otherwise, you're measuring your worth by someone else. This is the core of Ru's philosophy, just love yourself. 2. "We're all born naked and the rest is drag." According to Ru, drag doesn't begin and end with a man putting on a wig, hip pads, fake boobs, caking on makeup and lip-syncing to Cher. Nope. Drag is actually whatever guise we adapt to in life, be it to fit in, or simply stand out. Which means that Italian suit a banker wears to his 9-5 on Wall Street, is just as much drag as the bedazzled bra and feathered headdress of a showgirl in drag. 3. ”When you become the image of your own imagination, it’s the most powerful thing you could ever do.” So much of RuPaul's career was bringing the image of imagination, or his vision to life. And Ru is right, that is the most powerful thing anyone can do. Nothing makes someone more powerful than when they bring their "drag" to life. This drag can be anything. Whatever you've always dreamed for yourself, when you make that a reality, that is the ultimate victory. 4. "I feel like you're being sabotaged by your inner saboteur." Sometimes we're our own worst enemy. That little voice inside your head that tells you your vision or dreams are stupid or unattainable. Sometimes that voice wins and we give up, but deep down we always wonder "what if." In RuPaul's world, our biggest villain lives within us all. This is our "inner saboteur" which pumps up your fears and tells you to give up. While the outside world might fuel your inner saboteur with rejection, the real force that holds you back from achieving your goals and dreams is your inner saboteur. So tell that voice to take a seat and shut it! 5. "What it says on your driver’s license isn’t really who you are—you are something much greater than that.” This goes back to the quote that we're all born naked and the rest is drag. You can't define yourself by your age, height, sex, name or what you look like when you're caught in the headlights of a DMV camera. You can be whoever and whatever you want to be. Don't let labels define you or hold you back from achieving your dreams and living and your truest most authentic self! 6. “The overall commentary on what I’m doing is saying, 'Hey look! I get to create whatever persona I want to, and it’s all up to me. And the truth is, we are all basically the universe—pretending to be humans for a brief moment of time.'” Life is too short to be caught up or live as someone you don't want to be. No one of us knows what we're doing. It's that whole fake it til you make it, as each day we pretend to be humans. We are all living here for just a moment of expression in the universe. So we might as well make the most of that moment and shine. 7. “Fulfillment isn’t found over the rainbow—it’s found in the here and now. Today I define success by the fluidity with which I transcend emotional land mines and choose joy and gratitude instead.” While Dorothy was singing about somewhere over the rainbow, really she should've focused on the here and now. This goes in line with spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle, teaching about embracing the power of now. Make the most of every moment and live life fully. 8. "That is the key to navigating this life—don't take it too seriously. That's when the party begins." When you take life too seriously it's hard to have fun. You will be able to get through this life with so much more ease if you laugh at your doubts, fears, and failures. Life is a party, so start enjoying it! 9. "It's very easy to look at the world and think, this is all so cruel and so mean. It's important to not become bitter from it." The world can be cruel, we are living in a time where there is so much hate in the world. But we can't let that get us down. That haters are gonna hate, you just have to keep doing you. Or as Ru puts it, "If they ain't paying your bills, pay them bitches no mind." Right? Don't give the haters your time, keep focusing on yourself. 10. "You know, the matrix says, 'Pick an identity and stick with it. Because I want to sell you some beer and shampoo and I need you to stick with what you are so I'll know how to market it to you.' Drag is the opposite. Drag says, 'Identity is a joke.'" We're born naked, the rest is Drag. Instead of picking just one identity and having that define you, drag tells you identity is a joke, you can be whoever you want to be. Live Life Like RuPaul Now that you know these 10 inspiring RuPaul quotes, apply them to your everyday life. Don't take life too seriously, have fun, and be whoever you want to be.
